When Shivaji Maharaj was crowned in 1674, the choice of Raigad as his capital was no accident. Its geography, defensibility and symbolism made it the natural heart of the new Maratha state.
A Natural Fortress
Perched on a steep plateau with sheer cliffs on most sides, Raigad was extraordinarily difficult to besiege — a single well-defended path guarded the approach.

Beyond defence, Raigad's commanding height over the surrounding country made it a powerful symbol of independent self-rule for the people of the Deccan.

Shivaji developed Raigad with markets, a court and administrative offices, turning a hill fort into a functioning capital of a growing empire.
