Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj

Founder of the Maratha Empire (1630–1680)

Early Life

Born at the hill fort of Shivneri in 1630 to Shahaji Bhonsle and Jijabai, Shivaji was raised in the values of self-rule and devotion by his mother and his guardian Dadoji Konddev.

Rise of Swarajya

From his teenage years Shivaji began capturing forts across the Sahyadri, building the foundation of an independent Maratha state through bold campaigns and popular support.

Coronation and Legacy

Crowned Chhatrapati at Raigad in 1674, Shivaji built an efficient administration, a formidable navy and a system of governance that endured long after his death in 1680.
